Our participation in Expo 2025 Osaka is a historic moment for Adico. Taking the Portuguese Chair to an event of this scale, especially under Kengo Kuma's vision, is proof of our ability to innovate without losing our identity.
Miguel Carvalho, Managing Director of Adico
Inspired by the timeless Cadeira Portuguesa, the 5008 Osaka reinterprets its functional design, stripping it down to the essential elements that define its structure. Through this process of refinement, we aimed to achieve maximum visual lightness, creating a piece that nearly dissolves into the space.
Entirely crafted from metal by the renowned ADICO factory — celebrated for its dedication to Portuguese tradition and industrial craftsmanship—the chair showcases the precision and artistry of local manufacturing. Its pared-down lines and transparent structure allow it to blend seamlessly with its surroundings, borrowing the colors, light, and shadows of the environment.
Like the Portugal Pavilion, the 5008 Osaka subtly bridges Portuguese and Japanese design.
Its structural simplicity and pursuit of transparency echo the Japanese aesthetic of lightness and harmony with nature, while the solidity of the metal and the rigorous craftsmanship reflect Portugal’s tradition of durability and functionality.
The result is a piece that transcends borders, challenging the line between object and landscape — a contemporary expression of Portuguese design, infused with the essence of Japanese minimalism.Kengo Kuma, architect
ADICO's presence in the Portugal Pavilion at Expo 2025 Osaka underlines the relevance of Portuguese design, with iconic chairs such as the classic 5008, a symbol of timelessness and innovation that is present in more than 30 countries. For this special occasion, ADICO has developed a unique chair in cooperation with Japanese architect Kengo Kuma, author of the Portugal Pavilion, a preview of the possible partnerships between Portugal and Japan in the context of Expo Osaka.
