The iconic 5008 OSAKA Chair, designed by Japanese architect Kengo Kuma for the Portugal Pavilion at Expo Osaka 2025, crosses borders and now arrives at Casa da Arquitetura in Matosinhos.

The piece is part of the exhibition “Kengo Kuma: Onomatopoeia”, running from October 4, 2024, to March 8, 2026, showcasing the creative universe of one of today’s most renowned architects.

A new perspective on the Portuguese Chair

A contemporary reinterpretation of the historic Portuguese Chair (5008), created in the first half of the 20th century and a flagship symbol of ADICO, the 5008 OSAKA preserves the essence of the original design while adding Kengo Kuma’s minimalist sensibility.

Internationally recognized for his humanistic and integrative approach to architecture, the Japanese architect reduced the model to its essential structure, achieving remarkable visual lightness.

The fusion of Portugal and Japan

Fully manufactured in metal by ADICO, the 5008 OSAKA is described by Kengo Kuma as a piece that blends with the landscape, reflecting colors, light, and shadows. At the same time, it establishes a bridge between Portuguese and Japanese design: its simplicity and transparency reflect the Japanese pursuit of harmony with nature, while its solidity and precision evoke the Portuguese tradition of durability.
